Recent insights on galactic magnetic fields and cosmic ray electron transport from LOFAR

Cosmic rays and magnetic fields are nowadays considered both important ingredients for understanding galaxy evolution. Low-frequency radio continuum observations are an excellent way to observe them via the means of synchrotron emission from cosmic-ray electrons and Faraday rotation. We present a survey of 45 nearby galaxies using radio continuum observations with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR). We study the relation between radio continuum luminosity and star-formation rate, measure magnetic field strengths using the equipartition assumption, and explore the transport of both cosmic rays and magnetic fields in galactic winds.
