The Athena mission was originally selected in 2014 as a large-class ESA mission to provide a next-generation X-ray observatory that uniquely addresses the science goals of the “Hot & Energetic Universe.” Following a cost-assessment exercise in 2022, Athena entered a phase to redefine a “NewAthena” mission achievable within the 1.3 billion Euro cost cap (to ESA). Alongside, ESA has appointed members of the scientific community to the Science Re-Definition Team (SRDT) to re-assess and re-define the science goals of NewAthena, including identifying the mission-driving science objectives and ensuring it provides a flagship-class astronomy facility in the 2030s. The emerging mission profile from the re-definition retains the revolutionary capabilities of the observatory, enabled by a large collecting area mirror, a high-resolution spatially resolved X-ray integral-field spectrometer (X-IFU), and a powerful wide-field X-ray imager (WFI) led by Germany. Besides illustrating the NewAthena mission-driving science objectives and the crucial impact that the mission will have across a range of essential science areas, this splinter will emphasise the broad scientific capabilities of NewAthena as an observatory-class facility with the potential for new discoveries.
