Understanding solar flares: prospects and challenges in the era of Solar Orbiter

Alexander Warmuth
Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik Potsdam (AIP)

Our understanding of solar flares has benefited greatly by improved instrumental capabilities (both space-borne and ground-based) as well as by a significant progress in numerical simulations of magnetic reconnection and particle acceleration. I will review the current state of flare physics and discuss the future prospects from the novel observational assets that are becoming available in the era of Solar Orbiter. The focus of the discussion will be on the high-energy aspect of flares. I will conclude with remaining challenges that will have to be addressed with the help of an entirely new generation of space-based instrumentation.
